While programs may require additional materials, here are the basic application requirements:

  • Online application
  • $75 nonrefundable application fee
  • One official transcript from each postsecondary institution attended
  • Three letters of recommendation (required by most programs)
  • A goal statement
  • Current test results, as required by the program
  • TOEFL scores for international applicants
  • Supporting materials as required by the program

  • YOUR NAME (and any previously used names)
  • YOUR PROGRAM
  • PAGE NUMBERS ON EVERY PAGE

Please review the Graduate School Catalog and the Application Checklist prior to submitting your application to ensure you have completed all forms and gathered all required materials. Most departments will review applications only after they are complete.

Before You Apply

Making the decision to attend graduate school is a big undertaking. And, once you have decided to pursue a graduate degree, you want to find the right program and university for you. Identify your program of study and deadlines for your program. You may apply to more than one program, but you will need to complete a separate application for each program.

Graduate Degree and Certificate Programs

Not sure which program is for you?

If you have a bachelor's degree and wish to study on a non-degree basis without necessarily concentrating in a single department, you can apply as a graduate special student. If you are accepted as a special student, you must check with the department offering the courses desired to ensure that all prerequisites have been met, and to obtain the instructor's permission.

Request Official Transcripts

Request official transcript(s) from institutions you've attended, including Gallaudet. Your institution(s) should send original, official transcripts, showing your degree awarded, to the Graduate Admissions Office. These should either be mailed directly from your academic institution or provided through a credentials verification service (if your institution subscribes to such a service).

Request Official Test Scores

You must request your official test scores. When you take the GRE and TOEFL, you will be asked whether you want your scores sent to any schools. Use institution code R5240 to send scores to Gallaudet.

For more information on standardized tests, check out the GRE and MAT websites below. In addition, the MAT is offered here on campus.  It is offered every second Thursday of each month in the Career Library at 8 a.m. The correct number to call for information on the MAT is 202-651-5240.  The GRE is also administered through the Career Center.  It is offered every six months.

Contact Your Recommenders

Most programs require three letters of recommendation. Be sure to send invitations to your recommenders on the Recommendations page of the online application. A name and email address is required for each recommender before you click on the 'Send Invitation' link. Please note that an invitation is automatically sent if you: 1) click on the 'Send Invitation' link or 2) click to go to the next page or 3) save the application or 4) submit the application. The recommender name and email address may be changed before you submit your application and the invitation sent earlier will no longer be valid. After you submit your application, you will need to contact us if you want to make any changes to your recommender preference.

Prepare Your Goal Statement

Most programs require a goal statement. The goal statement should convince readers (the faculty on the selection committee) that you have solid achievements behind you that show promise for your success in graduate study. It might be helpful to think of the goal statement as a composition with four different parts:

Part 1: Introduce yourself, your interests and motivations

Part 2: Summarize your undergraduate and previous graduate career

Part 3: Discuss the relevance of your recent and current activities

Part 4: Elaborate on your academic interests

How to Use the Application Form

New Graduate Students

If you are applying to Gallaudet as a graduate student for the first time, please complete all parts of the application. If you are applying to Gallaudet as a graduate student for a degree, a certificate program or as a special student, this application is for you.

Returning Graduate Students: Reactivating Your File

If you filed an application for graduate admission at Gallaudet within the last two years but did not enroll, contact the Graduate Admissions Office and ask that your file be reactivated. You should also submit the application fee and any additional or updated information or records.

NOTE: If you are applying to a different program and want to use academic records or letters of recommendation previously submitted (within the last two years), submit a new application form and notify the Graduate Admissions Office that you'd like to use the materials you submitted before. You must meet all current deadlines and requirements. If you applied for admission more than two years ago, you must submit a new application, pay the application fee and provide all required materials. (Files are destroyed after three semesters.)

Applying to More Than One Program
  • You need to fill out an application form for EACH program to which you are applying.
  • You pay $75 with the first application, payable to Gallaudet University in U.S. dollars. For each additional application (submitted at the same time), add $40.
  • You need to submit separate goal statements, letters of recommendation and transcripts for EACH program.
